WE...Yes, WE can!
SCOUT WE!!!
YES WE CAN!!!
This was the slogan at the just concluded Western and Eastern Commands of the Sea Scouting section of The Scout Association of Nigeria seminar held at Lafiaji Nursery and Primary School at Onitsha , the Commercial City of Anambra State of Nigeria on the 5th and 6th of November 2011.
Program was organized to foster the further development of Sea Scouting Section within The Scout Association of Nigeria through the Training and development of young and Adults Volunteers in the act of Sea Scouting and their responsibilities of being useful and to help others (within the Ship) as documented in Scouting Law three.
The Chief Scout of the World; Lord Robert Stephen Smyth Baden Powell said in one of his quotations that “A good Scout should be able to manage a boat, to bring it properly alongside a ship or pier….” This with other activities on boat handling is called Watermanship.
Sea Scouts are members of the International Scouting movement, with a particular emphasis on water-based activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and rowing. Sea Scouting had its beginning at a campfire in England when the Chief Scout of the World (LBP) mentioned the hop that older Scouts would be interested in learning about boat management and seamanship. He stressed the need for young men to prepare themselves for service on their country’s ship.
LBP had the support of his brother Warrington Baden Powell and small old canoes inventors on the establishment of Sea Scouting in officially in 1912 after the LBP camp meeting at Bucklers Hard, Hampshire in August 1909.
Delivering his key note address, the Chief Commissioner of The Scout Association of Nigeria; Rev. Father Gabriel K. Amolegbe; ably represented by the National Headquarters Commissioner for Adult Resources; Olori Omo-Oba Olusoga Sofolahan stressed the needs for developing quality Adults in support of the Seamanship programs.
Sea Scouting emphasizes the provision of opportunities for personal growth and development as one of the rewards for contributing to the achievement of World Scouting strategies of Youth development and Volunteer in Scouting.
Unfolded at the seminar, is the Nigerian Sea Scouts Charter of Operations and Curriculum as approved by the Chief Commissioner of Scout. For excellent knowledge impartation and skills development, Curriculum was divided into three modular curricula namely:
1. Foundations towards Sea Scouting
2. Basic Adult Leadership Course in Sea Scouting
3. Advanced Expert Leadership Course in Sea Scouting.
Charter of Nigeria Sea Scouting Operations shall be sent to World Organization of Scout Movement through the African Regional Office for their notifications and to equally communicate our Management of Change (MOC) time-line for the programs that takes off effective 1st of January 2012.
Equally, for appropriate dissemination of Courses with all the Sea Scouting Commands in Nigeria, the initial Western and Eastern Commands of the Nigeria Scouting Association have been widen to Four (4) Nigeria Sea Scouting Commands namely:
· Northern Sea Scouts Command
· Southern Sea Scouts Command
· Western Sea Scouts Command
· Eastern Sea Scout Command
Programs and Courses will be disseminated in all the above Commands that comprise the 36 States of Nigeria plus Federal Capital Territory. In order to equip our Adult Volunteers with the Leadership skills required for their operations, two additional Leadership topics were taught at the seminar namely: Purposeful and Dynamic Leadership process in Scouting and Leadership Development Process in the Nigeria Sea Scouting Team.
Kudos goes to the Western Commander of the Nigerian Sea Scouts; Commander Owolabi Adesanya; who equally doubles for the State Headquarters Commissioner for Lagos State Scout Council Sea Scouting Section and to the Eastern Commander of the Nigeria Sea Scouting Section; Prince Wonah who is equally the State Headquarter Commissioner of Scouts in Rivers State. Chief Mrs. Antonia Odima, the Deputy Eastern Commander of the Nigeria Sea Scouting performed exceptionally well too, for providing the team with all the necessary support required.
The program ended with the investiture of a respectable gentleman, a retired Justices at the Anambra State Judiciary Commission and the President of the Anambra State Scout Council: Chief Ogene Ude as the Patron of the Nigeria Sea Scouting Section of The Scout Association of Nigeria.

The Scouter Newsletter
Dear all, its high time we relaunched ourselves and let the world know what we have been doing. If there are events and publicity is given a cold shoulder, definitely, such programme will only be known to those of us that attended. In other words, publishing our scouting events and activities will remain a better way to reaching to the world and tell them what we do.
In the light of this, with directives from the Chief Commissioner, Rev. Fr. G.K Amolegbe, I am calling on scouts, from various part of the country, to submit their articles on scouting activities, events and celebrated occasions that we want other scouts from around the world to know. This is not limited to poetry and sectional programmes.
I hope, with this move, we can rekindle the hope of Nigerian scouts and ignite the spirit of brotherhood amongst us.
Please note, not all stories submitted shall be published as we have limited pages to write on. So, be sure your stories worth being published.

Barrister Elusogbon's response to Kushimo
Commentaries on Kushimo's purported suspension of wood badge holder in Scout Association of Nigeria:
We want action not empty talk in Scouting. Well meaning Scouts all over Nigeria are charged to carry out the Mission of Scouting and ignore the noisemakers and agents of disunity such as "Chief" Kushimo. No power or authority can withdraw a lawfully earned qualification without due process being followed. The "Suspensions on paper is laughable and a farce". Where was the application of fair hearing demonstrated? What are the particulars of the alleged "unscouting and gross misconduct" set out in the bogus Letter of Suspension? All right thinking Scouts should ignore this ignorant and ridiculous ranting Kushimo. A desperate lone ranger with no followership. Scouting is all about teamwork and consensual relationship with others. You cannot force yourself on others or order people around! Scouting is NON MILITARY. We do no carry out "Orders" or liable to the whim of disrespectful people who cannot lead by good personal example. We cannot respect people without personal integrity or genuine followership. Scouts. Be Very Alert! These are desperate people with ulterior motives. As the saying goes: 'omi ti gbe leyin eja won'. These people are like fish out of water. They will trash and gasp for breath, they are about to expire! We look at them with pity and sadness for all the terrible confusion they have brought to Nigerian Scouting. It is better to ignore them than join issues with them. As far we are concerned they will soon be consigned to the dustbin of ignoble history.
